On July 4, 1976 the first Viking spacecraft is scheduled to land on the surface of Mars and begin the search for Martian life. Another Viking will land on September 4, 1976. Rather than look for Elysium, astronomer Percival Lowell's Martian capital, or Edgar Rice Burroughs' terrible green warriors of Barsoom, Viking will search for micro-organisms and the mysterious missing water of Mars.
