A vertical reference device that uses a viscous-damped optical pendulum was designed and built specifically for recording indications of verticality on each frame of 16 mm film used in an underwater cinema camera. This type of reference device was decided upon after a thorough investigation of other available kinds of sensors. Either fiber optics or lenses could have been used to translate the vertical reference indications onto the film; the lens system readout actually used was chosen because of its ease of fabrication.
