Failure occurred in the diagonal bracing, 600 mm below low tide level, in a North Sea oil rig. The failure was not discovered until some time after it occurred. The nature of the loading and stresses causing the failure was deduced from observations of the fracture surfaces and their positions. Although some weld defects were found, these were not thought to have influenced the failure, which was caused by wave induced bending.
