For the transportation and materials handling department, the year 1975 was a fruitful one. The Japanese National Railways (JNR) opened its New Sanyo Line for service, subway systems in different cities introduced high-performance car and station equipment in addition to integrated train and traffic operating systems, elevators were developed for high-rise buildings and apartment houses, cargo-handling at various yards was automated; these represent concrete results of our long years of research efforts for streamlining and higher efficiency. In its development of a superconductive magnetic levitation car, JNR launched into the first-phase construction project for an experimental line. On the JNR New Sanyo Line, automation of car inspection was carried out, opening up a new area of streamlining of transportation activities.
