The considerations leading to the adoption of the 'platform' system of construction are reviewed not only from a steelwork construction viewpoint but also from its interaction with the other shipbuilding activities necessary in the cargo tanks of a petroleum products carrier, i.e. coating, coiling, and piping installation. Production experience in building these vessels is related with particular emphasis on those aspects which did not conform perfectly to plan. Finally, procedures whereby the success rate may be improved are outlined and the conclusions are drawn that the system is worthy of repetition, tripartite conceptual stage discussion is vital, and that significant improvements in shop: ship weld ratios have been made.
