This paper introduces NTT's newly built cable ship, Kuroshio Maru. In building the ship, new designs were introduced to meet various demands which arise in undersea cable laying and burying operations. The outstanding features of the ship can be summarized as follows;incorporation of a computer system for automatic cable installation work, mechanisms for cable burying, facilities to splice cables in a cable tank, equipment for sea survey and various designs to improve ship maneuverability. Among them, the computer system, which has automatized undersea cable installation work, is the greatest advantage of the ship. Shakedown tests on board, to confirm ship functions, have been carried on since her launching in March 1975. All tests showed good results.
