Described is an extensive TCS (transportation control system) project by which it is possible to switch a freight car in a computerized yard in less time than is used to take just to find a record of where it came from and where it was going to. Inventories and movements of cars for the entire system are maintained in a IBM 370/168 computer at headquarters. Data are then transmitted and processed on minicomputer subsystems in individual yards (= Yard and Terminal Subsystem).
