Southern Railway's minicomputer-controlled yard at Sheffield, Ala., went into service during May 73. In planning it a very intensive computer simulation had been undertaken. It's communication system is working in close connection with Atlanta's computer and employs closed circuit television, microwave relays, two-way radio, talkback speakers, party line intercoms and a variety of other advanced electronics equipment. The present capacity of the yard is about 1800 cars daily and can be expanded to 2400 cars.
