Matcals (Marine Air Traffic Central and Landing System), will enable marine corps to utilize the same airborne avionics and operational procedures for carrier or forward air base landings under adverse weather conditions. The system will use phased-array radar AN/TPN-22 (ITT) and will be able to scan through an angle of up to plus/minus 23 deg in azimuth and approximately 8 deg total in elevation. Further the system will make use of independent landing monitor service using scanning-beam microwave guidance systems. Airport surveillance will be provided by TPS-63 radar. Matcals will employ a Univac AN/UYK-20 minicomputer for a variety of functions including generation of a data link message conveying steering commands to each aircraft.
