A summary of the more significant research accomplishments in automotive crash injury biomechanics by the General Motors Research Laboratories and biomedical engineering collaborators is presented. The major objective of this work - the experimental acquisition of knowledge concerning human injury tolerance and mechanical response to impact and acceleration - is discussed in terms of specific test programs and resulting tolerance and response data for several anatomical regions of the body.
