The FAA has embarked upon a program to develop a Wake Vortex Avoidance System (WVAS) to permit airport operations to function at optimum capacity commensurate with safety requirements. This paper describes the system concept and potential techniques that are available to satisfy the sensor, data processing, and display subsystem requirements. Potential early spinoffs to satisfy only the safety aspect are also covered.
