Nippon Electric Company has developed a ranging system for the scientific satellite program of the University of Tokyo and is being engaged in the development of a range and range-rate tracking system for National Space Development Agency of Japan. This paper describes design problems on major parts of these systems andr esults of test performed which indicate that extreme accuracy of 1.5 meters in range measurement and 0.01 meters/sec in range-rate measurement would be secured. Sources of error in range and range-rate measurements are also analyzed and, especially, range-rate error caused by short-term instability in VCO is discussed.
