US airforce releases proposal requests for development of user and ground control equipment for navstar global positioning system, a worldwide satellite navigation system. Program office is evaluating proposals submitted for the space segment of the system. Competing firms are Philco-ford, Rockwell International teamed with ITT, RCA teamed with TRW Systems and Gruman Aerospace teamed with Hazeltine. The navstar system is intended to permit various users-aircraft, ships, ground vehicles and troops - to make high-accurate three-dimensional position fixed. The complete system would consist of three rings of eight satellites. At least four satellites in suitable geometric relationship for measurements would be within view of any user througout the world.
