The application of existing estimation theory to the problem of specification and performance of passive sonar spectral estimators is considered. The spatial filter considered is a line array of M equally spaced omnidirectional hydrophones. It is shown that common deterministic considerations, such as sidelobe level, do not adequately describe the performance of spectral estimates, and that if plane wave interference is ignored, the performance degrades when the array shading progresses from the uniform case.
