Various methods of explosively joining pipes were investigated and/or reviewed to find economical methods which, with minimum noise, give joints of high integrity suitable for pipelines. In this work, lap joints were produced using external charges, while lap, double-lap (pipe ends abutting within a joining sleeve) and scarf joints were produced using internal charges. The assessment of joints by ultrasonic examination, leak and pressure tests, metallography, and peel tests, indicated that sound welds were produced in 25 mm, 89 mm and 203 mm diameter pipes.
