The initial segment of the paper is devoted to an identification of the characteristics of space-stable systems which have an important impact on Kalman filter design. Where appropriate, comparisons are drawn with the more familiar local-level mechanization of an inertial navigation system in order to emphasize important differences. A discussion of these differences leads to the formulation of objectives for the design of a Kalman filter to perform alignment, calibration, and reset for the space-stable system. The mathematical development of the filter design is then presented, followed by a presentation of computational results for system calibration. The paper concludes with a discussion of the general applicability of the filter design, and a review of the important assumptions necessary to its development.
