How do you make a technology based, R&D-oriented industry more aware of product cost and producibility ? At the Aerospace Systems Division of RCA, this question has been approached, encountered and to some degree answered. The effects of early design decisions on the producibility and cost of the product are not always known at the right time, and, therefore, are not always a consideration in the decisions. This paper will show how a formal producibility program was introduced at one facility, and how early collaborating between Engineering and Manufacturing reduced the cost of the final product early in the design phase of these programs.
