FAA will evalute 4 different types of wake-vortex sensores to be installed at a major airport: 1. pulsed-type acoustic radar developed by Transportation Syst-Center 2. Continous wave doppler type acoustic radar (Mass. Inst. Technol.) 4. Laser radar (NASA) . The trial airport installation will be used initially only for tests to gather data on sensor perfomance and vortexformation by a variety of aircraft types under different atmospheric conditions. 1974 systems could be used by tower personnel to warn of hazardous vortex conditions.
