A wide ranging investigation has been made of the potential of reaction bonded and hot-pressed silicon nitride components in diesel engines. These have ranged from stationary high-thermal stress items such as hot plugs (combustion pre-chamber liners), to dynamic items such as turbocharger rotors. The results of these trials have been sufficiently encouraging to indicate that for the small indirect-injection automotive type of engine there are desirable gains to be had both technically and economically from the utilization of engineering ceramic materials. In addition to proprietary activity in this area, some work has been of a non-proprietary nature and this will be described. Possible avenues of approach for future work in this field will be defined and discussed.
