The paper deals with the problem of instabilities caused by the coupling of modes of transverse motion. The slender structure is considered vertical in the static equilibrium position and subjected to a parametric excitation. The complete system of governing equations in 2D space is treated using Galerkins method. The equations are further simplified in order to produce a mathematical model that allows to determine the conditions under which these instabilities may occur. The theoretical model is validated through numerical tests.
