The deflection of sleepers in the ballast under traffic is a parameter which is of great interest to railway engineers, but its measurement in track is in practice not easy. The principle difficulty is that in most cases there is no fixed datam against which deflection measurements can be made, nor any simple means of providing one. The possibility of double integrating the output from accelerometers, which require no fixed datam, to measure sleeper deflection is therefore very attractive. However, past efforts to obtain realistic measurements in this way have usually relied on analogue processing techniques and have been unsuccessful. This paper describes a digital method for performing the double integration of an acceleration signal which gives much better results.
