In this paper the ultimate/residual strength of the midship section of a tanker and two bulk carriers under combined vertical and horizontal bending moments have been determined using an approximate method in grounding and collision scenarios. The interaction equation between vertical and horizontal bending moments for each ship has been determined. The reliability analysis of these ships has been carried out using the limit-state function based on the derived interaction equations and the conclusions based on the studies are presented.
