This paper was intended to have fifty illustrations including two plates. Owing to the high cost the plates have been foregone and the drawings reduced to thirty-two. Through lapse of time the originals, in pencil, have become unsuitable for reproduction. This is fortunate because Commander C. H. Williams, R.N.R., a Master Mariner, square rig, and a much better draughtsman than the writer, has most kindly drawn them afresh in ink. Fig. 17 is entirely the illustrator's.

Old marine dictionaries and books on seamanship are tantalizingly vague in depicting and describing the smaller craft. Consequently a good deal of guessing has been necessary for leads of braces and the like.
