This paper presents a methodology for the development and installation of an electric power quality monitoring system onboard a ship, for managing and optimising the electric power of critical loads that have a significant effect upon the overall ship efficiency as outlined by the International Maritime Organization rules. The improvement of overall ship efficiency is attained by installing power converters to electrically driven loads that play a key role in the ship operation. The outcome of this methodology is a system comprising measuring devices for recording both voltage and current. The data loggers are interconnected via a local network –in this case is a WiFi network – to a computer located in the control room of the ship. The method described in this work was developed within the framework of a research project and the system was implemented onboard an actual oil tanker.
