Convex optimization involving Linear Matrix Inequality (LM1) constraints has recently emerged as a very powerful tool for solving a wide scope of complex engineering analysis and design problems. In this paper, we provide an overview of this approach and show how it can be applied to several important problems in automotive applications, including structural design, input-to-output analysis, and nonlinear control design. A numerical example involving a nonlinear controller design illustrates the approach.
