Certain aspects are considered of transport‐related accidents to children within the context of child development and within the overall framework of the interaction between the child, the agent causing the injury, and the environment. The emphasis is mainly on various physical or environmental means of reducing the numbers of accidents and the severity of the injuries sustained, rather than on the education of children or their parents. Four main areas are discussed:

    children as passengers in cars, including the establishment of loan schemes for infant restraints;

    child cyclists, including bicycle design and the use of helmets;

    child pedestrians; and

    motor‐cycle accidents to children in off‐the‐road ‘scrambling’ activities, in which children's developmental capability of controlling a mechanically propelled vehicle is often overestimated.
