Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) technologies are being used increasingly throughout fleet monitoring and management systems, AVL technologies have the potential for improving fleet efficiency and providing better route planning and scheduling. However, because there are a number of possible AVL technologies from which to choose, transportation managers must analyze and evaluate their system needs and requirements before implementing any single or integrated approach to AVL. This paper is intended for a nontechnical audience and presents an overview of the AVL technologies available with some of their advantages and disadvantages
