In this paper, we develop a new structural analysis tool for the optimum design of ship structure; specifically an Efficient Stiffness Method (ESM) is presented by using beam elements for the three-dimensional modelling by employing the span point concept in conjunction with the eccentric system line concept. From our sample calculations, it is shown that the ESM for three-dimensional modelling is a very effective and efficient tool and that from the viewpoint of computing time and accuracy of results, the method has advantage over two-dimensional modelling and the finite element method. In 2010, a consolidated version of the Common Structural Rules (CSR) for Oil Tankers and Bulk Carriers was established by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). The CSR modified and strengthened the requirements for the structural design of ships compared with previous versions of classification rules. For example, in view of these new requirements regarding structural design, a three-hold analysis with asymmetric loads relative to the breadth direction should be considered under multiple loading conditions. This results in considerable additional time required for the analysis of ship structures. Furthermore, it requires much more time for optimum design, particularly when using the Finite Element Method (FEM) as is often required. Therefore, the new analysis method developed here to reduce the analysis computing time with sufficient accuracy may prove extremely valuable in the design stage.
