A multi-step design optimization method for the mid-ship section of a bulker decomposes the optimization of mid-ship section structure into three subproblems: double bottom, bilge hopper tank and topside tank. Design variables are classified into characteristic design variables and dependent design variables using multiple regression analysis. The dependent design variables are solved in the early stage of optimization steps setting the characteristic design variables to all the possible values. Characteristic design variable are determined at the final stage of optimization steps. The proposed method gives almost the same solution as the all-at-once approach but is computationally much more efficient.
