This chapter describes railway line configurations (i.e. single-track, double-track, triple-track and quadruple-track lines)Linesquadruple-track railway line and railway station types (e.g. way-side stations, junctions, terminals and seaport stations). After briefly introducing the main technical characteristics in terms of transportation performance, the fundamental design principles for railway lines and stations are presented, together with a few layouts.
