The statements made in Chap. 1 on track guidance are dealt with in more detail in this chapter. First of all, the vibration perception of humans is briefly discussed. The vibration excitation of rail vehicles by track unevenness and the possibilities of simulating vibrations are presented. In addition, the contact geometry between wheel and rail is discussed and the equations of motion of wheelsets are derived. The stability of wheelset running and resonances between wheelset and vehicle are also discussed. A large part of the chapter is devoted to the various types of running gear and bogies, using numerous examples from the railway and tramway sector. Finally, the theory and design of air suspension, which is widely used in rail vehicles, is discussed.
