Makkah City plays host to several high-demand events in the Middle East. Some residents use their private vehicles as taxis and provide a competitive price compared to other taxis. The objective of this study is to develop a multinomial logistic model for taxi modes (company-owned taxis and privately owned and operated taxis (POOT)) relative to private vehicles. This study also aims to offer improvements to POOT to make it more like demand-responsive transport (DRT) and draw benefits from that. More broadly, these improvements can aid in urban planning, reduce the number of vehicles on roads, and reduce emissions harmful to the environment. To achieve these objectives, this study focuses on residents’ behaviors in choosing modes of transportation. This research used data collected in 2010 by the municipality of Makkah (MOM) to understand residents’ behaviors in mode choice between private vehicles, company-owned taxis, and POOT. The results showed that several social demographic factors affect mode choice, which included age, gender, education level, income, possession of a driver’s license, and the number of trips. The study found that as age increases, the use of taxis owned by companies and POOT will increase. Individuals who make more trips prefer private cars over taxis. The study also found that women and the elderly prefer company-owned taxis over POOTs and private vehicles. This research discovered that males are more familiar with using POOT. More to that, the study found high income people don’t prefer both taxi modes (company owned taxi, and POOT).
