Abstract Husqvarna has with cooperation of Swerea SWECAST been evaluating applications where to use Metal Matrix Composite material to enhance the lightweight construction of handheld power tools. Some inherent problems with MMC material will be discussed and what measures that have been taken to cope with these material properties. Different approaches and methods to cast aluminum silicon carbide MMC is addressed and some of their virtues and drawbacks discussed. Finally test results are presented for a potential new application of MMC material for a Cut-off saw where the replacement of high tension steel with MMC aluminum has the potential to lower the weight of the part to less than 40% and lower the complete product weight by 0.3 kg.
