This chapter presents the fundamental interface between infrastructure and rolling stock. The strong emphasis on distance keeping mechanisms highlights the main motivation of design and analysis the brake system. For this purpose, notable accidents are reported and analysed for their implications. As a further aspect, the implications of headway, velocity and capacity are presented.
