Within the context of the current trend in automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies, which is leading to a digital transformation, Concurrent Engineering presents itself among the most productive methods that are in use today to study the feasibility of new design and for the early design phases of space missions and systems. This chapter introduces Concurrent Engineering (CE) and Concurrent Engineering Centres (CEC’s) to the reader, and discusses the options different organizations have to create their own CEC’s and apply CE, with a specific focus on the applicability of a lean approach. It also addresses the ways in which CE is evolving, and which are the upcoming trends in the field, covering Collaborative Engineering as an increasingly pursued goal, and the challenges that need to be considered.
