Abstract The principles of levitation and operation using the familiar permanent magnet are introduced here, with corresponding applications. The attractive and repulsive forces between two bodies are provided both in static and dynamic modes. One of the main advantages of this type is that there is no need for levitation control . On the other hand, low damping may be a limitation. With the development of high-strength permanent magnets, this maglev system may have the potential for applications in passenger transport and in factory automation systems. In particular, a Halbach array may offer viable maglev systems in various areas.
