Abstract Our study of the economics of shipping practice would be incomplete without an examination of the role and increasing influence of some of the numerous national and international organizations in the fields of shipping and trade. Many of them work in close association with governments and they are undoubtedly making an increasing contribution towards the facilitation and development of international trade. In this chapter we examine those organizations that relate solely to the shipping industry. Chapter 17 describes a number of other organizations whose scope is far wider but nevertheless affects shipping or trade.
