Each crewed mission into space is but the tip of a huge infrastructure of support that is crucial in the preparations for mission success. Countless unaccredited workers, designers, engineers, scientists and technicians labor for months to apply their sometimes small but never insignificant pieces of the puzzle. The preparations include the design of the mission itself, the fabrication and testing of the hardware, and the training of the teams destined to participate. These teams include not only the astronaut cadre, but also the flight controllers monitoring the mission 24/7 for the duration, the launch and recovery crews, and the families who remain at home to ensure that each team member's focus is on the mission itself and not the latest domestic drama.
