The concept of an electromechanical drum brake shows with its properties high potential for providing a suitable solution for the new requirements arising of automated driving and electromobility. One of the main challenges in the development of electromechanical brakes is the controller concept. Fluctuations in the efficiency of the electromechanical actuator and the sensitivity of drum brakes to the friction coefficient lead to variations of the brake torque, which can lead to a yaw failure of the vehicle.

A possible remedial measure is a closed loop brake torque controller. An integrated brake torque sensor for series production is not known. A possible solution is presented in this paper.

Based on an analytical model the internal forces and torques of the drum brake are analyzed, with the result of a strong correlation between the forces of the abutment and the brake torque, which is almost independent of the friction coefficient.

With a prototypical implementation of the measurement method, the research hypothesis coming from the theoretical investigation is analyzed. The measurement results and findings are presented, evaluated and discussed.
