The third phase (from 2000 to date) saw a progressively higher participation of private companies in space activities. It is a mixed economy, comprising the commercial space sector as well as government space activities. The commercial space sector is a high-technology niche with a complex ecosystem. It has distinguishing features such as the use of innovative technologies and longer terms for both projects’ development and return on investments. It encompasses: the commercial space services, including satellite broadcasting, telecommunication, Earth observation, geo-location, global internet coverage, and global navigation equipment and services; and commercial space infrastructure and support industries, including satellite and rocket manufacturing, launch services, ground stations and related equipment.
