Port smartization is increasingly used by many ports nowadays to promote efficient port development and improve the quality of the environment. To evaluate the effect of port smartization on carbon emission, this study regards the initiation of port smartization policies at each port as a quasi-natural experiment. Based on the panel data of 39 major ports in China from 2013 to 2021, the impact of port smartization construction on the carbon emission efficiency of ports in China is explored through a multi-period PSM-DID model. The findings of this study indicate that port smartization construction significantly improves the carbon emission efficiency of ports. The results pass parallel trend tests and remain valid after a series of robustness tests, including placebo tests, the substitution of the explained variable, the double difference with propensity score matching, etc. Moreover, heterogeneity analysis indicates that ports in the Yangtze River Delta and southeast coastal regions can more efficiently utilize smartization policies to enhance port carbon emission efficiency. Factors such as operational mode, transportation method, and energy consumption affect port carbon emission efficiency, and there is no direct correlation with port size.
