Abstract In the past decades, the volume of worldwide civil air transport has been steadily increasing with an average growth rate of more than five percent. Passenger and freight traffic have roughly doubled since the mid 1980s. The growth is generally expected to continue at the same rate: The International Air Transport Association currently predicts an annual average growth rate for total scheduled international traffic of 5.6% for passengers and of 6.7% for freight for the next five years (IATA 2000b,c).
