Space propulsion systems perform a variety of tasks, each with unique requirements reflected in a thrust range of over eight orders of magnitude. These systems employ diverse technical solutions, including chemical combustion, nuclear heating, and electrostatic acceleration. This chapter aims to introduce these propulsion systems, explaining their basic working principles and typical applications. To facilitate understanding and innovation, a categorisation scheme that encompasses all conceivable propulsion systems is presented. This framework offers order and guidance for future developments in space propulsion technology.
