A prerequisite for analysis and optimization of the timing of embedded software is a basic understanding for embedded software development and operating systems. This chapter “General basics” has two goals. The first is to cover or summarize important basics. The second is to establish references, where relevant, to the topic of timing. Thus, this chapter is not exclusively aimed at those who want to learn or refresh the basics. Because of this approach, even experienced software developers will appreciate the introduction of timing-related aspects to subjects that they are already familiar with.
