Recent global changes worldwide have caused scenarios as varied from one another as they are unexpected. The need for both virtual and physical communication is inherent to socio-economic development, hence the great importance of the role played by transport networks in general and maritime transport in particular. Maritime transport is the most sustainable means of transport (in terms of CO2 emissions), and is the one most frequently used for the movement of goods. UNCTAD (Review of maritime transport 2021. United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, Geneva. https://unctad.org/system/files/official-document/rmt2021_en_0.pdf, 2022) states that the largest volume of international merchandise trade is carried out by the sea. Not only in volume (millions of tons), but also in terms of miles travelled. Therefore, the ports and the cities that host them are fundamental strategic points on which this communication depends and whose strangulation could damage economic activity. This work reflects on the role of port cities and their engagement in maritime transport, as well as their role as logistics platforms. It analyses the situation from the approach of international economic strategies and the search for financial results in terms of profits. Maritime Transport activities must be compatible with social sustainability that allows maintaining a level of well-being compatible with sustainable economic development, according to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and particularly SDG 9. Although reference is made to the global context, the analysis focuses primarily on Europe due to the framing of this edited book as well as its relevance worldwide.
