The area where bottlenecks are still most evident is the internal market for rail services, which needs to be completed as a priority to create a single European railway area. An in-depth study of the quality of the rail journeyJourney can reveal the relative influence of individual factorsFactors on rail passenger satisfaction. This chapter presents a model of quality criteria for international rail transportRail transport, with a hierarchical structureHierarchical structure of 49 criteria, arranged in 4 groups of key criteriaKey criterion, with 16, 19, 6 and 8 sub-criteria. Passengers, train staff and railway management staff rated the importance of the sub-criteriaSub-criteria for each key criterionKey criterion using the AHP method. A first check of the transitivity conditions of the pairwise comparison matricesPairwise comparison matrix of the sub-criteria and the calculation of the concordance ratio showed that not all matrices were correct. These matrices were discarded. It should be noted that not all expertsExpert or respondentsRespondent can complete the matrix correctly. The AHP approach requires specific knowledge and skills. This makes it quite sophisticated in research. The discarded matrices reduced the number of evaluators in the evaluation teams. However, the reliability of the results increased. The reasonable agreement between the opinionsOpinion of each team of evaluators, as determined by the calculation of the concordance coefficientConcordance coefficient, made it possible to use the mean significance values of the sub-criteriaSub-criteria as the outcome of the problem solving. LocalWeightlocal and globalWeightglobal relative weightsWeightrelative were used in mathematical modelsMathematical model to quantify the technical parametersTechnical parameters of the railway track andTrainelements train elementsElement, the organisation and technologyQualityof the train journey of the train journeyJourney process, the cost and quality of the train journeyJourney, and the internal safetySafety of train travel. Additive mathematical modelsAdditive mathematical model allow the quality of a train journeyJourney to be measured by a single number ranging from 0 (very poor) to 1 (excellent).
