For cost-effective and safe construction of road, subgrade plays a vital role. Subgrade is generally constructed with locally available near-surface soils. In South West Bengal, available soils near surface are fine grained with varying amount of Gangetic silver sand. Alluvial soils are generally erratic, and presence of varying amount of silver sand makes them more heterogeneous. Presence of such sands results large variation in properties like Atterberg’s limits, compaction characteristics, and strength in terms of CBR of constructed subgrade. A large number of data generated during construction of rural roads in South Bengal were collected and then utilized for present study on variation in engineering properties of subgrade due to presence of Gangetic silver sand. Numerical models have been generated, results of which are compared with those in available literature. The results of numerical models relating percentage of silver sand present in such alluvial surface soils with various engineering properties of compacted soils in subgrade may be used in the field during construction if necessary.
