To improve the situation for passengers at crowded railway stationsRailway stations in a short time perspective, different measures were taken, and their effect was determined using state-of-the-art tracking sensors. In Lenzburg, standing benches were placed on one platform to encourage people to move away from the bottlenecks and thus improve the safety. In Bern railway stationRailway stations the main underpass was first equipped with yellow arrows and then with slightly inclined advertisement boards in order to encourage flow separation. It is shown that the standing benches attract passengers, part of whom were waiting before at the bottlenecks between the platform accesses and the platform edge. Also for the interventions in the underpass in Bern, a higher share of pedestrians walking in the main flow direction close to the center columns was observed. Nevertheless, the effects are relatively small compared to bigger improvements, but they can be useful for the time, until station upgrades are in place.
