The present paper presents a simulation approach for an authentic steering feel coming out of a steering model. Due to the increasing adoption of Steer-by-Wire systems, which is just one issue, there is a growing need to simulate the feedback, which is provided to the driver and has to accurately represent the vehicle behavior. The paper begins by showing the general consensus of Steer-by-Wire systems as well as an overview of the force feedback system and the respective steering model in use. Included in the steering model is the modelling of a mechanical steering system and an additional assist force. For the appropriate transfer and usability of the signals, hardware as well as software in the system must be adapted and improved. Applied in different combinations and qualities of encoder signal and sampling rate, the output of the steering model is evaluated and critical points were disclosed. Finally, the paper concludes with measurements of the proposed solution that shows substantial differences between the adaptions of both parameters of the system. This knowledge can be used to optimize the system in regards of cost efficiency and performance. The outcome of this research sets a basline for further development opportunities, which include characterization of steering feel and advanced driver-assistance systems, such as hand-over scenarios.
