Transport is undoubtedly a pivotal component in the development of smart cities. The concept of interconnected transportation represents a form of implementation of the smart city concept, particularly in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) trend. The smart city concept refers to a city arrangement that is interconnected, with ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) serving as a solution for sustainable urban transport arrangements. The notion of a smart city encompasses the integration of multiple systems into a unified entity. The Ministry of Transportation has expressed its commitment to the development of smart cities in Indonesia, with the urban transport sector constituting the primary area of focus. The implementation of ITS applications in Indonesia has undergone significant development, with non-cash payments being implemented at toll gates and on public transport.

One notable ITS implementation is the Advanced Traffic Signal Control System (ATSCS), which has been deployed in Jakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, and 20 other Indonesian cities. The system’s primary function is to facilitate traffic management, integrating traffic lights at intersections in real time to enhance community mobility. The development of BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) systems is a key priority in the advancement of ITS in Indonesia. Several cities, including Trans Jakarta, Trans Sarbagita Bali, and Trans Pakuan Bogor, have already adopted this system, while Bandung and Surabaya are poised to follow Jakarta’s lead in BRT development, given their role as transportation hubs.
